Tips for traveling to Los Cabos [How to save your budget]

Traveling to Los Cabos has become one of the most popular activities in recent years. Los Cabos is such a multifaceted destination, that for many people it is their dream beach trip in Baja California Sur.

Every year, thousands of domestic and foreign tourists come to Los Cabos to enjoy its beautiful beaches, its ambiance, its gastronomy, water activities, wildlife watching and much more.

In this article I am going to tell you my best tips for visiting Los Cabos. For your convenience, I have divided this guide by some points. This way, it will be much easier for you to organize your trip in the most efficient way possible.

Let’s get started.

1. Recommended season to travel to Los Cabos

Although Los Cabos receives tourism practically all year round, it can be said that it has two main and well marked seasons: Summer and Winter. Summer generally goes from the beginning of May until the end of October, and obviously it is when it can get hotter (it can reach up to 35ºC).

It is important to mention that there is a rainy season that usually covers the months of August and September. Probably if you travel during these months it will not rain every day, but obviously it is much more likely to rain for several hours, you have to consider that during these months there is also more humidity.

Regarding the climate, Los Cabos is extremely dry and with very little humidity (except during the rainy season). This is mainly due to the fact that the city is surrounded by mountains and a desert region.

One of the busiest vacation periods in Los Cabos is the famous Spring Break. This period (between late February or early April) is when North American students take a break from their studies and decide to travel.

So, after all this information you can decide when to travel to Los Cabos. Personally, I can recommend the months of February to May (consider that the months of January and December are high season and prices can go up a lot).

2. How to get to Los Cabos

Being such a popular destination, there are several ways to get to Los Cabos.

Plane

Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is the main airport in Baja California Sur and is located about 30 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas. There are several flights from different states of the country (mainly from Mexico City), as well as several direct international flights.

By car

One of the most popular ways to get to Los Cabos is by car, mainly because many people are already traveling around the Baja California Peninsula. Renting a car is, without a doubt, the most recommended way to get around Baja California (both south and north). It gives you all the freedom and comfort of being able to go when you decide to go to each place, plus there are many places that can only be reached by car (because there is no public transportation, for example). If you have more budget and your trip to Los Cabos is to celebrate a super important moment then you can consider this Cabo San Lucas Limo Service.

Tour

Another option that is available is to get to Los Cabos on a tour. This can be a good option if you only want to go for the day, don’t have a car and are looking for the most comfortable way to get there.

Public transportation

There is also the option of getting to Los Cabos by public transportation, many people do this if they are already traveling in Baja California Sur.

3. Cabo or San Jose for lodging?

The main question asked by people traveling to Los Cabos is where it is more convenient to sleep or stay. It is very important to mention that generally, in Cabo San Lucas you will find mostly all-inclusive hotels or resorts. Many of these are located right on the beach, others more towards the marina.

4. Book well in advance

Los Cabos is a very popular and visited destination, so the issue of lodging should be taken with caution to find the best options. I recommend that you book your accommodations well in advance, especially if you are traveling during high season (Easter, Christmas, etc.) and if you want to find a place with a good price-quality ratio. Sometimes hotels sell out months in advance, so be very cautious with this.

5. Be clear about the purpose of your trip

Be clear from the beginning (if possible) what is the purpose of your trip.

By this I mean define if you want a trip full of activities, if so: which ones do you prefer, do you want to try more adrenaline activities, more water activities, combine with more cultural activities?

If your goal is, for example, to enjoy the atmosphere of Los Cabos and the party, or on the contrary, if you are looking to spend a much more relaxed and peaceful days, what if you want to do a little bit of everything? Defining what you are looking for is a great tip for you to get the most out of your time, and also your budget.

Are you now ready for Los Cabos?
